Empowering South Australians to create sustainable & regenerative places

The Adelaide Sustainable Building Network (ASBN) is an independent, volunteer-led not-for-profit organisation driving ecologically beneficial design across South Australia. We bring together architects, builders, trades, researchers, and conscious homeowners to turn climate goals into real building practices.

Meet our team of local legends

ASBN is powered by a dedicated steering committee, advisory leaders, and a volunteer network who donate their time and expertise to enable positive environmental change across South Australia.

Sam Warren

Chairperson

Sam is an Associate in Sustainability & Climate Change at WSP, working in the buildings and infrastructure industry for the last decade. He’s a passionate advocate for a green, active and climate resilient Adelaide. His passion is making sustainability more accessible to people, helping us all make better informed choices both personally and professionally.

Fun stuff: Sam gives most sports a good crack, but he especially loves cycling and pickleball. He enjoys taking his folding bike on his travels, and is on a mission to sample the world’s best plant-based food and beverages.

René Schlosser

Treasurer

René has been part of the ASBN since 2019.

René works as an ESD Consultant with dsquared Consulting and is a certified Passivhaus Designer.

Fun Stuff: He makes a delicious Sourdough loaf.

Simon Samson

Secretary

Simon is the Director of SustainaBuilding. He started his professional career in the built environment as a carpenter, and always had a passion for better buildings. The ASBN inspired him to study the living building challenge and also become Certified as a PassiveHaus professional. He now works as a designer, building scientist and construction manager.

Fun stuff: Camping and fishing with the family, Living self sufficiently, Beekeeping, Home brewing, Audiophile.

Ken Long

Special Counsel

Ken has been part of the ASBN since 2011. Starting as its first volunteer and then becoming the Secretary when the group first became incorporated. Currently as the Chairperson, Ken facilitate opportunities for people in the development industry and the greater community to engage with concepts of sustainable design and be inspired to implement them.

Ken’s professional experience encompasses multiple facets of sustainable design consultancy to projects of all scales. This includes design optimisation, building performance simulation, green building ratings and life cycle analysis. With qualifications in Architecture, Sustainable Design and Ecologically Regenerative Design, Ken facilitates a holistic systems thinking approach to design problems.

Fun Stuff: Ken is an avid gardener, likes to play basketball, cycle around Adelaide and is working on a solid free hand handstand.

Kerry Reed

Steering Committee Member

Kerry joined the AdelaideSBN team in late 2014 with the hope of making a greater difference to the sustainability of our urban areas than she could do alone through her design practice.

She spent the first 17 years of her working life as a landscape designer and believes that a well-designed garden is just as important as a well-designed building in ensuring the best quality of life for people. She now works as a Facilitator with democracyCo as well as being ASBN’s first official paid employee, working part time as our Executive Director.

She holds qualifications in Garden Design, Design Studies, maj. in Landscape Architecture, Sustainable Design, Policy and Applied Social Research and Business Management.

Fun stuff: gardening, building, netball, hiking and camping.

Mauricio Herrera Villa

Steering Committee Member

Mauricio is the Senior Landscape Architect at Sproutt Engineering. Prior to moving to Australia in 2015, he spent four years working as a registered Architect in Colombia. His parallel horticultural research culminated in an ornamental plant guide for the city of Medellín, his hometown.

Having also completed a Graduate Degree in Urban Design and the publication of his research, he moved to Adelaide to undertake a Master of Landscape Architecture under an Australian government sponsored scholarship.

Mauricio’s published academic research in the Landscape Architecture space speaks to his passion for the field and ongoing commitment to professional development. His post-graduate work has seen him develop a broad portfolio of public and private works and is constantly involved in the enhancement, recognition, and education of his profession trough the continuous involvement in teaching at UniAdelaide, mentoring through SAILA and serving as AILA SA committee.

Cristina Nadasan

Steering Committee Member

Cristina is an Architect at JPE Design Studio. She has a passion for sustainable design and cost-effective problem solving.

As a NatHERS energy assessor, she believes that energy rating software has excellent potential to be used in the design process for both commercial and residential sectors to create better building outcomes.

Fun Stuff: Enjoys being active, particularly bouldering and camping whenever I get an opportunity to get away.
